With new smart devices being released every few months it seems, it’s hard to resist temptation and steer from the crowd. However, purchasing a new device on a frequent basis has some pretty devastating consequences. Apple disclosed in their Environmental Responsibility Report 2019 that 77% of the company’s carbon footprint comes from the production.**
More and more companies are jumping on the bandwagon and are offering refurbished products. We can understand why you may be a bit sceptical of the concept of a refurbished device, but below we’ve outlined some great reasons to give it a go.
It will keep your wallet happy
As time goes on and technology advances, we’re seeing the price of the latest models rising to crazy prices. Remember when our phones used to cost us $50 to buy outright and we thought that was absolutely outrageous? Sure, they didn’t have the best storage, or the world wide web at our fingertips. But their battery life was incredible and they were essentially damage-proof.
Nowadays, we can carry our PC’s, cameras and measuring tapes in our pockets, which is pretty cool. But that comes at a price (no pun intended). The cost of owning a smart device has basically doubled in the last 5 years. Take the iPhone 12 for instance. It claims to have the fastest chip in a smartphone, with the best camera, lighting-speed charge and 5G thrown in. But with ear phones at an additional cost and accessories to consider, a phone with decent storage space could cost you upwards of $2500. Ouch.
There is no real benefit from buying the latest version of any smart device, other than the advantage of having the latest tech benefits. If that doesn’t really bother you and you’re looking to save a few dollars, then look no further.
Less of an environmental impact
This one is self-explanatory. With less newer phones being purchased, and more older phones getting their full use out of them, there is less need to dig up further resources to produce a new product, which in turn produces less e-waste and therefore saving the planet. Extending a phone’s lifespan from one to four years can decrease its environmental impact by about 40%*
Refurbished does not mean used
There is a myth to say that ‘refurbished’ means the same as ‘used’. This is not true. You’ll most likely find these on sites like eBay or Marketplace. There is no guarantee on the ‘dodgy’ factor. With refurbished, you can be certain the device has not been stolen, is cleared of all personal data, and is unlocked and functioning well. If something goes wrong, they come with protection.
Still come with protection
Before being put up for sale, all refurbished phones have had a thorough check and have been tested to make sure they're in full working order. Hulii refurbishers are held to strict criteria to ensure that you’re receiving the highest possible standard of product
